Root Causes of Evil: Lessons from the Epstein Files

I don’t usually pay much attention to what the news has to say, except for a few headlines or what people tell me. It’s funny because my undergrad was in journalism, and I used to be a news junkie. But since becoming a follower of The Way (see: Acts 9:2), I have spent more time studying the Good News and steering clear of all the bad news. There is just so much bad news these days…

And the Epstein files have some of the most horrific news!

I was exercising on my stationary bike the other day, looking for a YouTube video to watch. I like the videos that Daily Dose of Wisdom creates. So, I clicked on one about the Epstein files because I trust this creator’s content, and I wanted to know what the big deal was about these files. All of these redactions and things people have been talking about made me curious. But after watching the video, it gutted me. As I was spinning and listening to what some of these files revealed, I felt sick, and then I began to sob. I thought of those innocent children and the depraved things that these people did to them. It’s beyond dark – it is downright evil. These bored billionaires rose to the top and now can’t figure out what to do for thrills, so they become predators — sick, demonic people who are beyond the pale. It is honestly hard to believe that this stuff is happening. (You can watch the video at this link: Yes, it’s demonic.)

If you watch the video, recognize how this stuff is right out of the Old Testament — the worship of Baal and the sacrifices of children. We think we’re so much better than those ancient people who practiced barbaric behavior but nope! Apparently, some rich folks just can’t seem to find satisfaction in their wealth, so they are going to excite themselves with very dark and devilish enchantment. They become slaves to the most gruesome sin.

This is why the worldview of Christianity is so needed today. Without the moral ethic that human beings are created in the image of God, thus giving all people inherent value, there is nothing to ground human rights in — people become playthings to the wicked. And then they call it “natural desires.” Gross.

I was reading the Book of Romans, and it’s right there in Romans 1:28-32 –

“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”

Jeffrey Epstein died in prison of an apparent suicide. He can’t testify to the rest of the repulsion. That’s convenient.

Death is the fate of all of us, and you have to wonder, as Epstein met his Creator, what went through his mind? Could he have been so totally lost that he did not recognize his own depravity, even as he stood before Almighty God? Perhaps. Maybe guys like Epstein have become so drunk in their deluded darkness that no light can penetrate, even when standing in judgment before the One who created light.

Evil is still very present in our modern, “high-tech” world. We think we’ve come so far from all of that “devil stuff,” but just look into the Epstein files to realize that’s not the case.

Our society has a soul sickness, and it is so tragic. Being good and kind and trustworthy just feels so much better! And knowing Jesus Christ is The Way to become a better person.

The older I get, the more I keep my eyes on eternity, storing my treasures up in heaven where Jesus says that “where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matt. 6:20) Those who have billions of dollars on earth can’t spend a dime of it in heaven, if they manage to even get there.

Now I am not saying all billionaires are bad. Of course there are people who do good things with their wealth, but these people that Epstein courted are not among them. These billionaires are bad. We’re probably just now recognzing the tip of that iceberg.

“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10
